Benefits of a Birth Doula

Why use a birth Doula?

DONA International doulas mother the mother

Women have complex needs during childbirth and the weeks that follow. In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualized care based on their circumstances and preferences.

DONA International doulas are educated and experienced in childbirth and the postpartum period. We are prepared to provide physical (non-medical), emotional and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth, as well as to families in the weeks following childbirth. We offer a loving touch, positioning and comfort measures that make childbearing women and families feel nurtured and cared for.

Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth

  • tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications

  • reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience

  • reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans

  • reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals

Research shows parents who receive support can:

  • Feel more secure and cared for

  • Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics

  • Have greater success with breastfeeding

  • Have greater self-confidence

  • Have less postpartum depression

  • Have lower incidence of abuse

Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation Services

Interested in Placenta Services? (Special rate for my doula clients)

Placenta Encapsulation is the practice of preparing the mothers placenta into pill form for her to ingest. In many cultures, it is believed to help the mother recover many of the nutrients lost during childbirth. Some of the potential benefits include hormone and mood stabalization, increased breast milk production, increased energy and feelings of wellness, decreased postpartum depression, and decreased postpartum bleeding.

The placenta can be prepared by steaming, also known as the Traditional Chinese Medicine inspired method or a raw method known as cold process. Your placenta was made for you and by you, so considering encapsulation should be a part of any womans holistic postpartum recovery.

STEAMED Encapsulation (Traditional Chinese Medicine Inspired “TCM”): $275

This method of preparing the placenta for encapsulation involves steaming the placenta gently with herbs. I use ginger and lemon and can add cayenne pepper by request. Putting the herbs in the steaming process is thought to bring out the placenta’s natural healing properties. Lemon is thought of as an antiseptic and helps to distribute the placenta throughout the body. Ginger is a warming and soothing herb, and specifically acts as a facilitator for energy and good blood flow. TCM is believed to have tonifying, healing, and warming properties. Just like cooking any food, the steaming process causes some nutrient loss (into the water below) and the placenta shrinks a bit. Because of this, the TCM method will yield less capsules than the RAW method.

UNSTEAMED Encapsulation (“RAW”): $275

This method of preparing the placenta for encapsulation skips the steaming process all together and is set for dehydration while still “raw.” It can be combined with TCM method so you receive half RAW and half TCM. Some people choose this method because they are raw food activists and believe the cooking or steaming process destroys some of the nutrients. One benefit to choosing the RAW method is that it provides a higher number of capsules as there is no shrinkage from the steaming process. This is why it is also called the “high yield method.”

Smoothie Prep: $35

Utilizing the placenta, unsteamed, directly after birth is becoming an extremely popular and important step in a new mother’s postpartum healing. You can use your favorite green or fruit smoothie recipe, or I can provide suggestions for you. A small thumbnail piece of raw placenta is easily blended in with any juice or smoothie recipe and Mother’s report that the taste of the small placenta piece is unnoticeable! If you are having a home birth, I can prepare a smoothie for you when I come by to pick up your placenta. For all birth locations, this option is available for placentas released within 48 hours after birth. 14 pieces are individually prepared, wrapped, and stored for use. This preparation yields enough for 2 smoothies a day for the first week. This is a great natural remedy for postpartum bleeding, works very rapidly, and often replaces pharmaceutical means of managing bleeding. Other benefits include rapid replacement of hormones, nutrients, and iron which aids in post-partum wellness.

Broth: $15

Placenta broth is the liquid remaining from the steaming process in the TCM method. It is made with filtered water, lemon, and ginger. After the steaming process is complete, the liquid is strained and bottled for consumption. It contains any nutrients lost during the steaming process and tastes like herbal tea. Reported benefits include an immediate energy burst, hormone balance, and feelings of well being. Mix it with your favorite lemon or ginger tea and enjoy this warm healing drink. Clients have reported a loving, bonding experience while sharing this drink with their partners.

Tincture: $35 each or 2 for $50

The placenta tincture is another way to reap the physical benefits from the placenta besides capsule form. Tinctures are mainly meant for energy, transition, stress, and hormone stabilization. They are great for returning menstrual cycles, menopause, and even puberty. The biological mother and daughter of the birthing mom can also benefit from the tincture as it has an almost indefinite shelf life if stored properly. Mom may also give the tincture to a baby older than 6 months for teething and transition. The tincture is made from a thumbnail size piece of raw placenta and 100-150 proof alcohol, aged for 6 weeks postpartum and then strained. It is stored in a dropper bottle much like the Bach Flower Essences.

Organic HEALING Salve: 8oz: $50 4oz: $30

The placenta salve has many uses. It is used to heal Cesarean section incision after the wound is closed and lessen scarring, itching and discomfort. The salve can also be used as soon as 3 days postpartum for hemorrhoids, perennial tearing, burns, diaper rash, eczema, sun burns and skin irritations. It is safe for your baby as long as the baby has no skin allergies. I also make this salve with no placenta in it and it’s simply amazing! I really can not express how wonderful this recipe is. It has become a staple in my home, and my children ask for it on a regular basis. It has replaced our diaper cream, chap-stick, lotion, and Neosporin. I keep one in my bag, one in the kids room, and one in the car. We can’t live without it and my friends and family feel the same way too. Ask me to bring by a sample and you will see how amazing it is!
